Some people have called the 1950s and 1960s the most important years in the history of America.  It was during this period that African Americans achieved the greatest gains in the struggle for freedom, equality, and empowerment.  As a young man, Jimmy was intimately involved in the Civil Rights struggle in Fayetteville.  He participated in demonstrations and rallies that helped to desegregate downtown stores, restaurants, and movie theaters.  He has always used his gifts to benefits others.  Proverbs 27:19 teaches us that “a man’s heart reflects the man.”  Jimmy’s heart represents the source of all his motivations—what he loves to do and what he cares about most.

After he retired from the private sector, Jimmy joined the Fayetteville Branch of the NAACP where his passion for the community grew as he began to realize that much needed to be done to make a difference, to change discriminatory practices, and to work for justice and equality for all people.  From interacting with the community and the organization’s leadership, he gained a greater appreciation for the struggles of the black community.  Jimmy held many positions in the Fayetteville Branch and is now branch president of one of the largest NAACP branches in North Carolina.  He is also the NC State Conference District 9 Director.  In this position he oversees the activities of the NAACP branches in Hoke, Harnett, Cumberland, and Unified Robeson Counties.  Jimmy is a Life Member and a Golden Heritage Member of the NAACP because he strongly believes in the work that the NAACP has been engaged in for the past 111 years.

In the past Jimmy was a member of the E. E. Smith Senior High School Alumni Board of Directors on which he served as Chairman for four years; the Fayetteville Planning Board for two years as Vice Chairman, during which time he was instrumental in passing the Infill Ordinance. He is currently a member and an active supporter of the following organizations in the Fayetteville community:

  • Life Member of the Disable Veterans Association
  • Life Member of the Retired Veterans Association

Jimmy is a graduate of E. E. Smith High School and he attended Fayetteville State University and Fayetteville Technical Community College.  He also worked in the private sector for several years.  He is a proud father of eight adult children.  Jimmy also has several loving grandchildren and great grandchildren.
